Righteousness by faith can't make sense to us unless we understand what faith is. And faith can't make sense unless we understand what it rests on. Jesus doesn't say that more works will relieve our spiritual poverty, but we need to be "gold tried in the fire." Peter defines that as genuine faith. How can we distinguish between that kind of faith and Satan's masterful counterfeit perfected after thousands of years? "The devils also believe, and tremble" (James 2:19)!
