In the biblical book of Mark, the stories Jesus tells are often interrupted by an inner story sandwiched between two other episodes. Shepherd's investigation seeks to clearly define this intercalation and to explain its function in the Markan story. The ironies produced by this pattern speak to major theological themes in Mark, especially Christology and discipleship.
