Brought up in Germany 200 years ago, Caroline was taught that a woman's place was in the kitchen. But she wanted a profession and independence. Then William rescued her from being the family drudge, took her to England, and trained her as a singer.
At first Caroline was annoyed by the clutter of his hobby— telescope making. Later, when he became a full-time astronomer, she was bored with calculating star positions and recording observations for him. But she soon caught his enthusiasm for the stars. She found eight comets, and William's discoveries, and Caroline's careful records, enabled people to see and understand more of the universe than ever before.
